Just 50 miles to the north of San Francisco, and known as California’s most iconic wine region, Napa Valley has built a reputation for producing exceptional wine, much of which can be collected and aged such as its coveted Cabernet Sauvignon.
The main valley is just 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, but the County also includes other distinct areas such as Lake Berryessa, Pope Valley and Wooden Valley. There are 5 main cities within the County and several smaller towns with distinct identities.
The Napa region has also become proficient at delivering gorgeous scenery, and a delightful visitor experience – whether visitors come for the wine or for the world class food, high end hotels and ultra-luxury resorts with ever popular spas, or other experiences such as hot air balloon rides, bike riding and lake-based water sports.
Business and the Economy
Rather than just being an item of historical interest, that the Napa economy was originally built up based on cattle, grain and fruit, it is important to note that farming is still of vital importance to the local economy. There are approximately 700 grape growers in Napa County, spread across 16 distinct AVAs within the area. Despite this, Napa County still generates only 4% of California’s annual wine grape harvest. More than 40 different wine grape varietals grow in this climate and with the wide variety of terroirs found here. Approximately 20% of vineyard acreage is planted to white wine grape varietals and 80% is planted to red wine grapes.
There are roughly 475 physical wineries located across the county and these produce finished product for more than 1,000 wine labels. 95% of these wineries are family owned and nearly 80% produce less than 10,000 cases annually. As a whole Napa Valley AVA produces just 0.4% of the world’s wine production.
The wine industry (and related businesses) generate an annual economic impact of over $9.4BN locally and almost $34BN for the USA overall. Eco-tourism and hospitality are also thriving industries in this county.
